Hobo - Coventry music History on the old vox blog was created by Trev Teasdel in 2006 being primarily the archives from Hobo Music Magazine which he ran in Coventry in the 1970's. Material on newer Coventry bands and artists has also been added along the way. This site is now hosted by Typepad since Vox closed down and a new A to Z of Bands is being created via Google Sites - https://sites.google.com/site/bandsfromcoventry/
Hobo - Coventry Music and Arts Magazine was founded in 1973 by Trev Teasdel and John Bargent (Bo) with other editors joining - Babs Wainwright, Arthur Brown. Pete Waterman wrote a Soul article for it and supplied a Soul Chart and advert from his Soul Hole Record shop in Coventry c1974.
The Hobo Music and Arts Workshop was established at the Holyhead Youth Centre in Coventry autumn 1974 (and later upstairs at the Golden Cross) with support from Coventry Voluntary Service Council. The Hobo Workshop gave first gigs to quite a number of bands, some of whose musicians went on to play in Two Tone bands or made it in some way in the music business. The
Reluctant Stereotypes (from which 80's band
King developed) had their early roots there.
Neil O'Connor (Hazel's brother) played there with
Midnight Circus (later re-branded
The Flys),
Dave Pepper (later with
XTC) had his first gig there.
Charley Anderson and some of the Two Tone musicians jammed with
Neol Davies below four years before
Two Tone was created. Much more too.
